You do not need to be perfect with money; you just need a simple plan you can repeat every single payday.
- 1Find out how much money you have: Write down your bank balance, cash on hand, your next payday, and the size of that paycheck.
- 2List every bill due before your next payday: Rent, electricity, phone, car payment, insurance and minimum credit-card payments — with amounts and due dates.
- 3Protect your basic needs first: Housing, food, utilities, medicine, transportation to work, insurance, then minimum debt payments.
- 4Create a payday budget: Plan each paycheck instead of only a monthly budget, using the payday formula.
- 5Set a weekly spending limit: Divide your spending money by the number of weeks until your next payday.
- 6Stop three money leaks: Review 30 days of transactions for unused subscriptions, delivery fees, impulse buys and bank fees.
- 7Save your first $100: Move $10, $20 or $25 to a separate savings account on payday — not at the end of the pay period.
- 8Get current on overdue bills: List overdue accounts and call each company early to ask for options.
- 9Build a small buffer in your checking: Leave $50 untouched in checking, then grow it to $100, then $250.
- 10Choose one debt to pay off: Keep minimums on everything, then put extra toward a single debt at a time.
- 11Increase your income: Pick one realistic option: extra hours, selling unused items, sitting, deliveries or freelancing.
- 12Repeat the plan every payday: Check the balance, list bills, cover needs, transfer savings, set the weekly limit, fund one goal.
